Mount Ngauruhoe is an active stratovolcano or composite cone in New Zealand, made from layers of lava and tephra. It is the youngest vent in the Tongariro volcanic complex on the Central Plateau of the North Island, and first erupted about 2,500 years ago. Although seen by most as a volcano in its own right, it is technically a secondary cone of Mount Tongariro. The volcano lies between the active volcanoes of Mount Tongariro to the north and Mount Ruapehu to the south, to the west of the Rangipo Desert and 25 kilometres to the south of the southern shore of Lake Taupo.Māori traditionsThe volcano was named by Ngātoro-i-rangi, an ancestor of the local Māori iwi, Ngāti Tūwharetoa. Local traditions say that Ngātoro-i-rangi called volcanic fire from his homeland Hawaiki which eventually emerged at Ngauruhoe. The name either commemorates his slave, who had died from the cold before the fire arrived, or refers to the insertions (ngā uru) of his hoe (paddle-like staff) into the ground.Recent activityNgauruhoe erupted 45 times in the 20th century, most recently in 1974. Fumaroles exist inside the inner crater and on the rim of the eastern, outer crater. Climbers who suffer from asthma may be affected by the strong sulphurous gases emitted from the crater.

  • Great hike and amazing views. The hike is not a joke, it's about 20 kilometers long and a good part is uphill, sometimes pretty steep. We were lucky to come on a sunny day and the weather was beautiful. Otherwise we wouldn't make it. It was a good idea to leave our car at the end of the hike and to go to the start by shuttle. We were on our own schedule and made it in 9 hours.
  • This was an absolutely gorgeous hike. It was all pristine until, while soaking in the scenery, I peered up the side just in time to witness an incredibly bizarre encounter; two short, stocky, ragged fellows (most likely children) ran up the side in an attempt to hurl a piece of jewelry into the volcano not more than 400 metres away from us. I pulled out my binoculars in time to see an incredibly scrawny twig of a man ambush them. They traded a few blows, but before any of us could get up there to offer assistance or call the authorities, they all darted out of eyesight. We couldn't find where they went and gave up searching after an hour or so. One of our party did hear some muffled yelling, but never found the source. Besides that, it was an incredible experience. Also, watch out for the gigantic eagles. They we're grabbing up small animals and soaring off with them. Don't bring dogs or other pets.
  • For me one of the best walks in North Island. Views are amazing, walk is hard but well worth it. Check the weather before you go there, bring some good food, plenty of water and don't rush too much and just enjoy the walk.
  • Great hike, the view at the top is worth every effort. What made the hike even more beautiful, we did it on Christmas day with a group of close friends. It was amazing.
  • This is a short, brutal climb up a scree slope without a formal trail that can be done as a side-trip off the Tongariro Crossing. Ankle support and gaitors, or something to keep rocks from entering your shoe, are recommended. The scenery can be breathtaking (the ascent also, but in a different way ;-).
