Create an itinerary including Taranaki Falls
Plummeting 20 m (66 ft) over the edge of a large lava flow, Taranaki Falls provides good photo opportunities. Winding through red tussock and alpine scrublands before entering beech forest, the easy return loop trek to the falls offers some great views of the volcanic landscape, a narrow gorge, and open heathland. As you approach the falls, you'll walk down hundreds of stairs. Keep an eye open for small native birds such as whiteheads, grey warbler and occasionally skylarks. Make sure to check the weather because it can easily start raining. Plan to see Taranaki Falls and other attractions that appeal to you using our Tongariro National Park trip itinerary planning site.

  • Amazing falls, one of the best in NZ. The walk is a steady 2 hrs, 6km, so feels like a good walk, but most people can easily do it. Its impressive after wet weather. I would recommend going in...

  • An excellent track, partly in the open partly through bush and partly through more Bush along a stream. The track does undulate but with reasonable fitness it's fairly easy. Great views along the way. The falls themselves are majestic and well worth the 2 to 3 hour walk. Would do it again.
  • An excellent short walk through the bushes as well as the open space. It's a really easy walk for about 2 hours return to see the falls. There is a toilet just before the falls, in case if you need to know. There wasn't much water when we went though, hopefully during winter it will be bigger.
  • We added this on to the end of our hike to upper Tama Lake, which was a nice reward on the way back. We did the Upper Lake which was a great hike, easily marked, took us just over 5 hours with bathroom breaks and lunch but we were moving. Just over 19k because we came back to see the falls. But it will be quite easy to get to just the lower lake minus the time and distance. Highly recommend if you have the time and fitness. Definitely start early and good luck having proper visibility of both mountains.
  • Great walk through various landscapes. Average fitness required, some uneven terrain and a few steps at the end but we'll worth it. Takes about 2hrs and easy access from chateau area
  • Great walk on a well maintained trail. It’s not completely flat so expect some small inclines and steps. There is a very short section of stairs near the falls - if you at the trailhead near the Skotel then you will go down these steps and not up (if going in the other direction), in general going this direction is a bit easier. Takes ~2 hours to complete without stopping. It can get a little icy in a few patches in the winter but nothing that requires any equipment beyond a good pair of shoes.
