Ohakune Old Coach Road, Tongariro National Park

(5/5 based on 110+ reviews on the web)
Walk or ride a bike along the historical cobblestone of Ohakune Old Coach Road, a path used by drays and carts in the early 1900s to transport passengers and cargo. Over the decades surrounding plant life has grown over the road, but the stones remain, creating the perfect outdoor trail. Identify native birds during your tour, such as falcons and pigeons, and try to catch sight of the Kiwi Rail Overlander train crossing the Hapuawhenua Viaduct each afternoon. Stop to study information panels along the path to learn about the road's history and nearby railway construction. • Since I was stuck for a few days in Ohakune, was looking for I do an activity. This mountain bike track is quite short but great (17 km). The road is well built and the many information boards along the way explain the construction and importance of the old coach road. The two viaducts are impressive. I recommend to take the shuttle bus to Horopito and then to go with the bike to Ohakune.

  • We've done this ride 3-4 times now with our 8-10 year olds. A great day out. Start at Horipito and it's 60% downhill. (Always a bonus). The track continues to get better over time & the curved viaduct...  more »
