The mountainous reserve in the center of the North Island houses three active volcanoes--the aquamarine crater lakes that adorn these volcanic hotspots are widely considered to be among the best attractions in the country. During a trip to Tongariro National Park, many visitors choose to hike and climb to admire the lakes on challenging day excursions. Use our New Zealand trip planner to arrange the hows, wheres, and whens of your trip to Tongariro National Park.

Where to stay in Tongariro National Park

The few accommodations within the park itself cluster around Route 48--the main road leading into the protected area--and consist of a campsite and two well-appointed alpine-style hotels. If you can't find a room there, look just outside the entrance to the settlement of National Park, offering a selection of mid-range and luxury mountain lodges on Route 4. Most of the options there offer free parking and complimentary breakfast.
