Routeburn Track, Te Anau

#1 of 28 in Outdoors in Te Anau
Hike across a variety of landscapes by following Routeburn Track, a renowned rainforest route in New Zealand. Most visitors take two to four days to cover the 32 km (20 mi) track, but you can also tackle shorter sections of it before returning to the starting point on the Queenstown side of the Southern Alps. Classified as one of the country's "Great Walks," this hiking route includes several huts and campsites along the way. Prepare for the route's long-distance views by charging your camera, or bring binoculars to see ever farther. If you choose to visit in the winter, remember that the track's alpine sections may require advanced mountaineering skills. Plan a Te Anau trip in moments using our itinerary builder.

Parking up pretty hard. I tried to get the length of the exam from Queenstown. Leave the final six as the key line a lot of non-paved dirt. Besides, by the time the wind go me unbelievably pushy. Once the root itself is good. Tried to go up to Routeburn flats in relation to time one way down to about two hours. At the entrance are greeted by a tremendous amount of MOSS from the thing it was them.

My goal was to make it to Harris Saddle and come back in one day but winter is here and right after Routeburn Falls Hut, the path was covered in ice and since you can't really walk on the side of the track, that was really dangerous. Even with my trekking poles I had to stop there and go back. It was a beautiful day though, cold but no clouds. If you do try to challenge it, you'll probably need more than 2h from this Hut to Harris Saddle, be really careful!

A challenging track to run. It had 4 seasons in one day, and the conditions underfoot always required my full attention! Very rocky, and often slippery when wet, but it's a very scenic area, and the views when not cloudy are spectacular!

I did the day trip to Lake Mackenzie and back. Once you passed the trees the view is absolutely amazing! Can highly recommend it.

One of the most scenic hikes in the world. You get to see the enchanted forests (down low), the beautiful alpine scenery (up high), and spectacular valleys in front of you. An unforgettable experience!
