Milford Sound, Te Anau

4.7
Experience New Zealand's untouched wilderness by cruising Milford Sound, a fjord located within a World Heritage Site encompassing four national parks. Moved by the sight of rocky cliffs rising out of perfectly still water, writer Rudyard Kipling once described this fjord as the eighth wonder of the world. Mitre Peak, one of the most photographed mountains on the planet, towers over the sound. Most of the area's half a million annual visitors arrive by one of many bus tours from Queenstown offering easy access to this pristine natural world. Numerous operators also offer flights from Queenstown, drastically reducing transit time and giving you extra time for additional activities that day. If you're staying closer to the national park, you can reach the fjord by hiking a 50 km (31 mi) walking trail starting at Lake Te Anau. • Beautiful part of New Zealand. Fabulous untouched scenery. A cruise on the fiord is a must. After rain is the best time to view as you get incredible waterfalls. Dolphins, seals and penguins can all b...  more »
  • Great place to spend time, even if you don't do a cruise. We did not do a cruise but did he two treks in the park and the summit trek on the way back to Te Anau. Take bug spray for the sand flies!  more »
  • Worthwhile the long drive. Any of the boat services is fine, they do the same route and you will be seeing out the window anyway. We used Jucy's Maiden of Mildford and self drove from Te Anua, and it ...  more »

  • Simply no words to describe how magic this place is. Get there and get the cruise to discover yourself. If you're blessed with a clear skies day, then that'll be even more awesome.
  • Milford Sound on a fine day is stunning. This is one of the most popular tourist destinations in New Zealand. The whole experience from driving in and driving out leaves you breathless with scenery that is unique and unforgettable. There is simply too much to see here, walks, rivers, hiking tracks, boat rides, helicopter rides, water falls, sea life, just too much. Pick your day carefully if you can and take insect repellent and your camera. The road in is very easy to drive apart from a few twists and turns around the Homer Tunnel, but nothing to be afraid of.
  • A must do in new zealand, great with good weather. Take one of the cruises, they can be cheap and the journey in the fjord is staggering. Smaller boats are the best ones, Even if they are a little more expensive, totally worth it! Do not take the coach, you Will miss so much on the road, and you can't take your time. Try to stop on the road on your way back, the light is better, there are less people around, and the coaches usually do not stop on the way back. May and june are the best months, the Days are short, but you'll have the fjord (and the cruise) all for you.
  • It's one of those things you do twice: once in the rain and once in the sun. The amount of waterfalls you see in the rain is breathtakingly stunning. As for the sun, I'll have to come back and try the tour again. :)
  • Fabulous! Great drive in, roads are so well maintained, plenty of spots to stop and soak in the environment and then to catch the boat out onto the sound. Fantastic must do if one has the time. Allow for a day trip if not staying overnight.
