Milford Sound, Te Anau

4.8
Experience New Zealand's untouched wilderness by cruising Milford Sound, a fjord located within a World Heritage Site encompassing four national parks. Moved by the sight of rocky cliffs rising out of perfectly still water, writer Rudyard Kipling once described this fjord as the eighth wonder of the world. Mitre Peak, one of the most photographed mountains on the planet, towers over the sound. Most of the area's half a million annual visitors arrive by one of many bus tours from Queenstown offering easy access to this pristine natural world. Numerous operators also offer flights from Queenstown, drastically reducing transit time and giving you extra time for additional activities that day. If you're staying closer to the national park, you can reach the fjord by hiking a 50 km (31 mi) walking trail starting at Lake Te Anau. • We thoroughly enjoyed our day at Milford Sound! It had rained the day before, which gave us the wonderful flowing waterfalls but with the clearest, bluest skies you can imagine. (Just luck, you can't ...  more »
  • Maybe it is offense to say this about one of the top attractions in NZ, but I must admit that after all the effort and travel involved, it was. . . nice, but not as spectacular as we expected. It is u...  more »
  • This is an awesomely beautiful place. How beautiful, you ask? So beautiful that we took the cruise in the rain and it was still awesome. Speaking of rain - a little warning that the cruises don't tell...  more »

  • Stunning natural views that will leave you breathless. We did a tour via cruise and helicopter and was able to see the beauty of the sound by both land and air. Highly recommend this to anyone looking to appreciate the sheer beauty of what the Sound has to offer.
  • Milford Sound is breathtakingly beautiful and nature at it's finest. We cruised through here on the Ovation of the Seas on a picture perfect sunny day. The cruise director gave a running commentary of the history, the depth, who and what lives in this sound and many other details. We saw the Bowen Falls and enjoyed the experience of the cruise ship turning 720 degrees so that we were able to view the sounds from all angles. Absolutely amazing.....
  • We went to Doubtful Sound prior to this Milford Sound cruise. We find Doubtful Sound more magnificent with dreamy feel. However, Milford is cheaper. You may want to consider Milford Sound if budget is a constraint. Milford Sound will be a "normal" cruise to us if we have not seen the group of dolphins swimming out the the open sea! It was really a wow factor. There are some seals along the way plus a few nice waterfalls. #J2ACE
  • We found the boat tour to be a little boring.... I guess we were comparing it to Philippines where it's very similar but much much more beautiful. You're experience will depend on your expectations and what you've experienced in life but nevertheless we did take some good photos.
  • Breathtaking views, if you are lucky with the weather. On wetter days the minor waterfalls add to the spectacle, we were lucky to see dozens of ad-hoc falls, and the sun came out. Well worth the trip and boat tour.
