  • This is no ordinary NZ tramp. Tough because it does not have a normal track. Mostly rocks, streams, snow and everything in between. Best not to take young children because of the terrain. Just make...  more »

  • Great view at the top and worth the climb. But it could be treacherous if it starts raining as the smooth rock becomes very slippery. People have lost their lives here. It started raining when I was up there and I understand why.
  • A beautiful day hike to get an amazing view. You walk in the valley for around 30 minutes before you start your hike to the Saddle itself. This part can be challenging from time to time. At some steep points, ropes are fixed in the mountain to help. Half way point on the ascend is the lake. The last increase is a little tough but after that a gigantic outlook awaits you. If you are lucky there can be Kea´s around, even on the way up and in the valley. Take your time on the descent because it is quite exhausting for your knees. The Hike is absolutely not recommended if it rains and it is wet. A Doc member will sit in the parking lot to inform you about the upcoming weather conditions.
  • Amazing view!
  • One of my most favourite short walks in the world. Give yourself 6-7 hours return. Go on a fine day and take plenty of snacks and water. The view rivals those on the Routeburn. I would do this again in a heartbeat.
  • It was absolutely fantastic, breath-taking views after around 2 hours walking and a chance to walk in the snow and get to the summit after an additional hour and a half. The reviews say there isn't usually snow during the summer but, just be careful if there is, as it can be very slippery on the rocks towards the summit after the sun has turned a lot of the snow into ice and sludge (did a little bit of slipping and sliding while climbing up :'D) My girlfriend and I didn't find it too difficult though there were some quite steep sections, some areas even had ropes anchored into the rocks for you to use if you're having a tough time! There is a a few lakes that you can see from the two hour view point (you pass one of them around 30 minutes before which is nice) Would really recommend this :)
