Hop on a ferry to view the impressive Maori Rock Carvings, a collection of individual carvings into the rock face of Mine Bay standing over 10 m (33 ft) high, a gift to the town of Taupo. The work of master carver Matahi Whakataka-Brightwell and Jonathan Randell and completed in the 1970s, each carving is unique unto itself, with its own story, meaning, and significance. The carvings can only been seen by water, so opt to take a guided boat tour or get a closer look with a guided kayaking tour. The more comfortable option of the two is the ferryboat, where visitors can sit back and relax while munching on snacks and listening to the informative guides. • Amazing and impressive... and the quick excursion by boat with Ernest (old steam boat) was a fun experience.
  • Very impressive modern day rock carvings. The artist dedicated it to his Maori grandparents. You can only get there by boat, plenty of tour operators can be found at Taupo harbour. The (huge) Lake can be rough sometimes, you might want to drink a ginger beer in order to calm your stomach before you board a vessel.
  • Great trip on the cruise cat. Staff were fabulous and looked after us very well. It's a relatively short trip but well worth it. Reasonable priced I thought.
  • YOU got to check out the rock carving.Give the captain of the Ernest Kemp a call hes the Man.
  • Choose your craft carefully as it will impact the experience. Around a two hour trip with good photo opportunities. Best light morning and afternoon trips. Evening cruise return s close to 9pm.
