Huka Prawn Park, Taupo

3.5
#3 of 16 in Parks in Taupo
The whole family can explore and play at Huka Prawn Park, New Zealand's only prawn farm. As well as producing over 30 tons of shrimp a year, this quirky aquaculture venture plays host to a wide range of games and activities. Begin your visit with a guided tour of the prawn nursery and hatchery before practicing your putt at the hole-in-one golf challenge, trying your hand at prawn fishing, or resting your feet in the geothermal footbath. Kids will enjoy testing their balance on the adventure walkways and tinkering on the water piano. When hunger strikes, you can feast on your own haul of shrimp or visit the riverside restaurant. • Took the kids (5, 3 & 1 yrs old) to this. They loved "fishing" for prawns - for about 10 minutes... Although they had buckley's chance of catching anything with a fishing rod. Some people managed it. ...  more »
  • You need time for this attraction and to get the most out of it a good guide. Ours was Sian who brought to life what might otherwise be quite a dull topic.  more »

  • Took the kids here for a few hours and ended up staying the whole day. Great experience with a variety of activities to do - while the prawn fishing is the highlight there are fish, boating, interactive activities and a nature walk. The one downside is the place is such fun that is does get a lot of people - hard to fault the place for this.
  • Had a fantastic day trying to catch our lunch, with no success mind you. Also a swing of golf as well. Lunch was very tasty with a great lesson learnt about theses little creatures that live in recycled warm mineral water. Prawns are originally from Malaysia.
  • **This review is only for the restaurant in the huka prawn park** We did not have time to do the prawn park tour but decided to have lunch at the restaurant. Good food, amazing produce - prawns, but tad overpriced. Also, the minimum prawn bucket was 1/2 kilo, which was quite a lot for even 2 people to finish. They probably need to introduce a quarter kilo variant too. Desserts were simple, but tasty. Service could be a bit better.
  • Quite a nice spot here if you haven't been before. Especially the prawn park as it is a fun experience to fish for prawns. Don't expect to catch a bucket load though either there aren't many prawns in the Honda or they've gotten really smart. The restaurant is a bit mediocre. Prawns are highly over priced and don't feel fresh. When I first came years ago it was very different. But with the number of tourists coming in now I guess they have to keep up with demand and there just aren't that many fresh prawns to go around.
  • This was the 5th time I came to this Prawn farm, and I think that many things have been changed. I was really enjoyed for the prawn fishing and eating fresh prawns in its restaurant and even some times, I just bypassed Taupo, I would come to this restaurant for their fresh and yummy prawns, though their price was not too cheap (was about $99 per kg). However, I was disappointed this time when taking my family to this farm. I would not say anything wrong with the prawn fishing but when we had prawns in its restaurant, I was totally disappointed. the service was fine but the quality of the food (prawns). we bought 1kg for garlic butter and 0.5kg for steamed prawns, for 4 of us. the taste of prawns was not as good as it was, and I had eaten 5 mushy prawns my self, and the others at least 2 mushy prawns. we were very disappointed, the price of the prawns was not cheap, at $98.50 per kg. It should be providing very fresh and good quality of prawns at this price however, they only tasted like something you bought from supermarket pricing at $20 per kg. very very disappointed, I will not go back for the near future.
