Huka Falls Walkway, Taupo

Must see · Waterfall · Hiking Trail
Hike or bike the trails around Huka Falls Walkway, draining the country's largest lake by surface area and appealing to both amateur photographers and adventure seekers. Just upstream from the mighty falls, the Waikato River enters a rugged canyon and narrows abruptly from 100 m (328 ft) down to just 15 m (49 ft) across. The sudden constriction of the river's flow creates massive pressure that helps make Waikato's dramatic 10 m (33 ft) splash into a freshwater pool all the more spectacular. Walk a footbridge to admire the force of the falls, which the native tribes called "Hukanui," the Great Body of Spray. To get even closer to the roaring waters, try jet boating on the river. • We walked from the Car park to Huka falls the scenery was amazing. There had been rain the night before so had to be careful on the declines.  more »
  • An excellent walk for the family. Not too hard so you don't have to be overly fit to do this. You can have a swim in the hot water creek on your return.  more »

  • NOTE: This point is the START of a walkway up to Huka Falls - there is a car park right up by the falls, if you prefer. However, I'd full recommend the walk. It's easy going, with some fantastic views across the river. Also takes you passed the hot pools.
  • Beautiful trail suitable for all ages Along the riverside, nice and greenly path, while most part covered by trees The entire journey will take approximately 2 hours round trip Toilets facilities (with small fee) available next to the Falls Highly recommended
  • Delightful and easy walk, even with a toddler on my back, approx 1h including photo stops, stunning views of the river, to arrive to the much impressive huka Falls. A must do
