Orakei Korako Geothermal Park & Cave, Taupo District

Must see · Hot Spring · Wildlife Area
Witness nature's power at work and admire the breathtaking landscapes at Orakei Korako Geothermal Park & Cave. Known for centuries for its geysers, thermal pools, terraces, and naturally carved geological formations, this area remains one of New Zealand's oldest and best-known tourist attractions. The famous Ruatapu Cave, with its pool of warm acid water, is just one of numerous monuments of geothermal activity you'll encounter in the area. A network of boardwalks gives you easy access to all of the thermal field's main points of interest, but be aware that numerous steps along the trail make it difficult to navigate for wheelchairs. However, the visitor's center is fully accessible to everyone, and in addition to souvenirs, informative material, and cold drinks it provides free-of-charge baby carriers to visitors with little ones. Make Orakei Korako Geothermal Park & Cave a centerpiece of your Wai-O-Tapu vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Wai-O-Tapu vacation app.

  • Absolutely spectacular! I've been living in NZ for 15 years and this was one of the best things I've ever done here. It was surreal, you're left alone to explore and there's so much to see. Other worldly! The kids from 3 to 12 years old loved it too and for anyone that says it's expensive, we went to Waitomo Caves last weekend and it was 3x the price! The place is in excellent condition, the kind of thing you don't mind spending money to look at because you can see that it all goes back into the place! Can't wait to come back :)
  • All the thermal activity that I was hoping to see. Easy walking board tracks. And easy access by boat from the Visitor Centre.
  • You get taken across the water in a boat to wander through some amazing geothermal scenery. I love the fact of being left alone, wandering at your own pace and with only a few other visitors it was tranquil. To linger with only the sound from the geothermal activity was quite magical. I thought the $39 cost was high to start with but in the end it was well worth it.
  • Definitely worth visiting this gem located about 15 mins drive from. State Highway 1 near Taupo. You take a boat ride across the lake and take your time to wonder around the geo thermal at your own speed. There is a cafe, clean toilets, friendly staff with plenty of parking. Dogs are allowed as well. It takes about 2-3 hours to complete the tour. I believe you can also park your self contained camper van or caravan.
  • One of the best Geothermal Parks in New Zealand with plenty to see while emersing yourself in nature. The paths are all in great condition with various lookout points to soak in the all the natural features. Excellent views over the water to top it all off.
