Absorb the history of the proud local community at Russell Museum. With impressive and informative exhibits focusing on a wealth of different topics, including the history of the Maori people in the area and the town's maritime heritage, the museum introduces visitors to the rich history of the town of Russell. For about a hundred years, the town served as a hot spot for international teams of whalers, bringing mercantilism--and also debauchery--to the coast. The museum does not shy away from approaching this grisly chapter of its past, a time when it was known as the "Hell-hole of the Pacific." • Russell is a funny old place, steeped in history. Just across from Pahia where the treaty was signed that meant the birth of New Zealand as a nation. Russell has a history of whaling and Maori culture, missionaries and early settlers. There is also a big replica of one of Cook's ships. A nice way to learn a bit more about the history of the area and of New Zealand as a whole.
  • Great little museum with old tools and weapons and a great model of Captain James Cook's ship, the HMS Endeavour.
