Mt. Tarawera, Rotorua

Categories: Volcanos, Nature & Parks
Inspirock Rating:
4.7/5 based on 100+ reviews on the web
In addition to offering exciting outdoor activities, Mt. Tarawera holds significance as a piece of New Zealand's history. In the 1800s, tourists used to flock here to see the mount's pink and white silica terraces, which were destroyed in 1886 when the volcano erupted. The eruption left several huge craters and blue lakes, which today serve as a playground for outdoor enthusiasts visiting the now-dormant volcano. Hike to the summit, tour the mount on ATVs, or experience a thrilling scree run into the crater. Make Mt. Tarawera a centerpiece of your Rotorua vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Rotorua holiday planner.
