Ngarunui Beach, Raglan
(4.6/5 based on 100+ reviews on the web)
The rough western exposure of Ngarunui Beach provides ideal surfing conditions along this stretch of black sandy beach. Visitors come for the beginners' surfing, but stay for the sunbathing and invigorating swimming in this scenic spot. Lifeguards patrol the beach during the summer months, keeping an attentive eye on swimmers. Onsite surf schools rent out boards and wetsuits. Take advantage of the scenic area above the beach for picnicking, hiking trails, restrooms, and lookout points to watch surfers and sunsets. Lush green rolling hills surround the sandy beach. Note that in windy weather swimming can be a challenge here; inexperienced swimmers should exercise caution. • I often go this beach, even on gloomy weathered days. The sand is dark and super thin. Very good for walking, for sunbathing, for surfing. Stunning views from the road to the car park.

  • A stunning and nearly pristine beach with space for everyone. It's great to see horses being exercised, people surfing, swimming and fishing or just enjoying the scenery. Beautiful bush walks close by and great food within 10 minutes drive. What more could anyone ask for?
  • Beautiful beach. One of the best in the country. Just the walk back to the car park after hours of swimming and surfing isn't ideal lol
  • Great beach for hanging out, throwing a football/frisbee, and of course surfing. Particularly great for beginners riding the whitewash. Watch out for the rip in front of the lifeguard house though as it's taken more than 1 life.
  • Cute little seaside town... Some decent food shops also
  • Great view
