The Remarkables Ski Area, Queenstown

4.4
#3 of 26 in Winter Sports in New Zealand
Shred some powder and take in the alpine scenery of The Remarkables Ski Area. This snow sport resort boasts a versatile terrain along with a wide range of facilities to appeal to experts and first-timers alike. An early learning center, designed for kids from three months to 15 years, helps young visitors build up their skills and confidence. After a long day on the slopes, refuel at the onsite restaurant, cafe, coffee bar, or, for an extraordinary experience, the mountaintop ice bar. With superb views and ample outdoor seating, including comfy beanbags, it comes as no surprise that this is one of the resort's most popular après-ski spots. Gear up at the snow-sport store, rental spot, and repair service, all contained in the resort. • Breathtaking views of Lake Wakatipu and Queenstown. Hikes or mountain biking. We advise.

  • What glorious views to be had! I hadn’t been up here for many years. We went up to get views of the area and wow! The drive is a little challenging but well worth it.  more »
  • We visited in Summer when they wasn't any snow (obviously!). However, the views were remarkable (pun intended) as we had a great trip up! I can't wait to see what it looks like in winter during our ne...  more »

  • Huge yes. Beautiful area although the choice of lifts and slopes is very limited. Awesome skiing conditions especially in the morning (clear skies) and cloudy in the afternoon. Most pistes very well prepared
  • The Remarkables are remarkable! Great set up. Huge cafe so that everyone can find a seat. Good food and coffee. Typical mountain prices. You can take your own food if you want to save money. They have self assist lockers which work really well. Staff are super friendly and happy. Such an awesome ski resort. We will definitely be back.
  • Came up using the shuttle service from town which was really convenient. It was handy buying the ski pass and bus pass in town so I could just head straight to the lifts when I arrived. The snow is decent, particularly in the higher areas. I found that the snow on the sugar bowl chair to be really nice. The trails around the shadow basin were also quite nice. There was also a lookout at the top of the shadow basin chair which looks out onto Queenstown. Be wary that it requires a short trek to the lookout and riding down requires a fair level of skill. The cafe at the base is quite nice. One side has more expensive food like steak sandwich while the other has cheaper options like loaded kumara fries and pies. Fairly large dining area inside and out. With the buses, they start heading back down to the station from 1.30pm. Really nice place to spend the day.
  • There's lots of fun to be had at the Remarkables. We were a group of 2 intermediate, 1 advanced and managed to find enough great runs to keep us busy for a couple of days. If there was no snow, it would get boring pretty quickly. That said, you can always fall back to the park, which is varied enough to keep just about all levels busy. There are a few cutouts, rollers and small drops around the place to have some fun with or without snow. We managed to get powder day and with a bit of exploring got fresh lines all day. That's pretty rare for a hill of this size as it usually gets tracked out quickly. Maybe it was just a quiet day, but with a bit of traversing or minimal hiking, a lot of fresh tracks were made. If you're a beginner, there's plenty here for you too. Oh, and get the loaded kumara wedges.
  • Hair raising drive up, road twists and turns right in side of mountain. Views of queenstown and sutronds are stunning. Worth the drive up
