Queenstown Hill, Queenstown

#1 of 10 in Trails in Queenstown
Hiking Trail · Hidden Gem · Nature / Park
Walk the steep slope or follow the less strenuous winding trail to the top of Queenstown Hill, also known as the "mountain of intense sacredness," to enjoy a bird's-eye-view of the town, the surrounding mountains, and the lake. Near the top, you'll see a metal spiral sculpture on a stone foundation, called the "Basket of Dreams"--look for the plaque inscribed with a poem from the artist. Refuel at the hilltop restaurant or go carting if you are feeling more adventurous. Note that one of the trails to the top of the hill crosses private land; if you do see some livestock while hiking, keep a respectful distance. • Queenstown Hill is a really lovely walk which rewards with beautiful views of Queenstown and the lake below. The beginning is nice and shaded and gradual, with it becoming slightly steeper and...  more »
  • Solid walk for semi fit people. The views from the top summit above, are exceptional. Not much parking at the bottom. 360 degree views over the Queenstown area. Worth the time and exercise.  more »
  • This is a wonderful path right in the middle of the city. Easy to find with google maps, signs and well-marked parking. Yes, it is steep, but we did the whole thing return in an hour with just a...  more »
  • Make sure you go all the way to the summit
  • Took about 2 or 2.5 hours return. First 10 minutes or so was slightly uphill so it was tiring, but the rest of the track was primarily easy. There was also a point in the track where the road would split into a) the left, which was faster but steeper or b) the right which takes a bit longer but was supposed to be easier. We took the left route; it was okay. Views from the top were amazing as usual. Having clear skies and just the right warmth of a summer day was a plus. Going back, we took the other route just to have a different experience and views. Would recommend if you have an extra halfday in Queenstown 👍
  • Done this hike in three hours return. Stopped for lots of photos. I'd recommend only taking photos when you're at the top as views are best up there. It was a bit challenging especially getting to the summit and then returning the steep rocky way. It was worth it for the amazing views of Queenstown.
  • Really nice walk, accurate walking time. Great view at the summit and its also not too crowded. You can also see goats up close which is nice....
  • Lots of uphill but an amazing view of Queenstown and the lake from the top. Great break from the hub-bub of town and a nice way to stretch your legs after a long flight. You'll probably want closed-toe shoes as the top is a bit rocky....
