Piha Beach, Piha
(4.8/5 based on 460+ reviews on the web)
Explore and relax in a wild coastal landscape at Piha Beach, formed by distinctive volcanic black sand. Divided in two by the imposing bulk of the towering and iconic Lion Rock, the beach remains one of the area's most popular. Grab your surfboard and hit the waves, or just kick back along the shoreline and enjoy the view of the sea, accented by the lush surroundings. Keep in mind during your visit that the beach sometimes has very dangerous riptides, so swimming far from the shore is best avoided even for confident swimmers. Put Piha Beach into our Piha family vacation planner and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

  • This area is quite surreal. the black sand is really unusual and the rugged rock coastline is somehow empowering. The gusty wind and crashing waves is really lovely to experience.
  • Awesome long beach with dark black sand. Lots of surfers to watch and Lion Rock to climb up to for a stunning 360 view. Nice beach to spend some time.
  • Must see ! Amazing black sands beach with beautiful views ! Possibility to do some hiking all around !
