Haruru Falls, Paihia

#3 of 19 in Nature in Northland Region
Waterfall Nature / Park
When in Paihia, use the opportunity to take a break and immerse yourself in the scenic natural surroundings of Haruru Falls. While at 5 m (16 ft) the waterfall may not be one of the tallest in New Zealand, it's definitely one of the easiest to reach. After a short walk over a well-maintained trail through lush nature, you'll be able to enjoy the views of the waterfall and relax on one of the benches. Despite not being very tall, the waterfall is fairly wide and carries a lot of water, especially during the colder months. If you're visiting when the weather is chillier, make sure to bring waterproof clothes to protect yourself from the spray. Using our world travel planner, Paihia attractions like Haruru Falls can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

  • You can go two ways to the falls, either by road 3km or The Walking Trek 6km which is stunning. Well worth the walk.  more »
  • Worth the stop. In a beautiful setting and easy to get to. Just a short walk from the parking area to the falls.  more »
  • Easy to drive to and just a short walk to the falls. These are broad falls with a lot of water flowing over the drop. It was a nice short side trip, but if you have seen a lot of other water falls, th...  more »

  • We did the kayak up & walk back. Nice easy walk back with the kids (though it is a long walk for their little legs). The falls were pretty enough but if I had my time again I'd probably go sea kayaking to the islands instead
  • Beautiful falls. Very easily accessible. A safe pool area is there to sit and relax in the stream. The falls are moderately high and good overall views.
  • Nice waterfall but quite a muddy water. Do give the walking track a go just be careful of the early parking closure
  • Natures beauty and power is fierce and this was no exception! One can sit and listen the roar of the falls before even gazing on the power falling over!
  • It's okay. Nothing amazing but the walk from Waitangi is worth it. We were there after a drought so not really impressive but a nice place nonetheless. Recommended if you have 2-3h to kill in the Bay of Islands

Where to stay in Paihia

As a welcoming tourist town, Paihia offers a range of accommodations suitable for visitors with a diverse set of criteria. Boutique hotels and self-catered apartments dot along the coast, some offering excellent views of the bay on request. While most lodgings are located in the town center, farther out you can find campsites and resorts that, because of the settlement's modest size, still put you within walking distance or a short car journey of the wharf and town center.
