Tane Mahuta Waipoua Forest, Opononi
(5/5 based on 300+ reviews on the web)
Peer up at the largest living kauri tree at Tane Mahuta Waipoua Forest, a protected sanctuary since the 1950s. Reach the ancient tree via a short boardwalk, leading through the leafy native vegetation. Sit by the base of the immense 4.9 m (16.1 ft) wide trunk, dwarfed only by the tree's 45 m (148 ft) height. Head farther along the track to a second viewing platform for a wider view this giant, allegedly well over a thousand years old. Stay on the boardwalk at all times to avoid tripping over the tree's vulnerable surface roots.
