Tane Mahuta Waipoua Forest, Opononi
Categories: Forests, Nature & Parks
Peer up at the largest living kauri tree at Tane Mahuta Waipoua Forest, a protected sanctuary since the 1950s. Reach the ancient tree via a short boardwalk, leading through the leafy native vegetation. Sit by the base of the immense 4.9 m (16.1 ft) wide trunk, dwarfed only by the tree's 45 m (148 ft) height. Head farther along the track to a second viewing platform for a wider view this giant, allegedly well over a thousand years old. Stay on the boardwalk at all times to avoid tripping over the tree's vulnerable surface roots. This was certainly worth the drive for the windy forest. Tane Mahuta is spectacular and the atmosphere is hard to put into words.
There's something about visiting the Lord of the forest. This magnificent ancient giant is a must see. So sad to see so many dying Kauri trees on the roadside, dying long before their time.
Great walks in beautiful bush. The doc guide was extremely knowledgeable in the history and was very friendly.
