Moeraki Boulders Beach, Oamaru

While on the Otago coast don't miss the chance to visit Moeraki Boulders Beach, one of the most famous natural attractions on the whole South Island. Scattered along the beach, these enigmatic rocks weigh up to several tons and many of them have an almost perfect spherical shape. While science identifies the boulders as concretions that have formed over millions of years, there are also many less scientific and legendary theories about their origin. The pristine beach on which the boulders are located is easily accessible and the nearby parking lot saves you a long hike to admire this famous phenomenon. • I have been to the boulders so many times. They are one of my favourite things to see near Dunedin. I still have no idea about the science behind them but they are SO cool.  more »

  • Nice spot for photos. Just drive to the public car park and walk for few mins if you do not want to go through the Cafe. Make sure to go during low tide otherwise you may not be able to see the boulders properly. Popular tourist spot and hence it gets difficult to get the perfect photo if you go during holidays or weekends.
  • This place is amazing. If your driving down South island I recommend this place for a stop over. Have a walk to the beach and be amazed with rocks (big round one). Busy place as tourist buses stop here. After a walk we decided to have lunch and It was yummy. Very tasty and fresh. They got drinks, alcoholic and non alcoholic. Coffee was great too. Stuff are helpful and very accommodating. They also got a souvenir shop.
  • A great attraction! There are actually quite a few of these boulders so the crowd kind of spread out. There's a cafe and gift shop nearby so it's good to drop by and maybe get yourself an ice cream! Definitely recommend this place as a pit stop!
  • It's an extremely lovely place to be doing your morning stroll. This place is also one of my favourites for sunrise given the direction its facing. Also very good for milky way when the season is up. Over the years, some boulders have been smashed and disappeared and there seems to be new ones (? Not sure? I may just be confused), but having last come here 4 years ago, I wanted to shoot a sunrise with the exact same composition I had but couldn't find the 2 boulders anm. Definitely check the tide times before you come, and avoid high tides.
  • Fabulous unspoilt beach with these strange and enigmatic boulders. The sign on the road south takes you to parking, restaurant and souvenir shop but you can also get to the beach a little further down. It's a short walk. Interestingly, while the Moeraki boulders are the most well known, there are other beaches a little further south which also have some and even more though collapsed. Worth exploring if you have the time.
