Bushy Beach, Oamaru

(3.9/5 based on 120+ reviews on the web)
Bushy Beach is not just any beach--it holds the last remaining natural coastal vegetation in the area and supports native wildlife like penguins. True to its name, the shoreline is decorated with shrubbery like hebe, ngaio, and broadleaf. The attraction provides several outlooks where visitors can spot yellow-eyed penguins, fur seals, and occasionally sea lions and elephant seals. Be sure to dress very warmly to avoid shivering in the strong winds. Visitors are only allowed on the beach when the penguins are not there (usually between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.). If you're visiting before or after that time, head to one of the viewing points to watch the lovable creatures come ashore and feed. Note that beach access is prohibited from November to March, when penguins may be feeding with their young at any time of day. • The beach is some km south of Oamaru. At 7 pm, many people to the vantage points to see the Geeloog penguins. The view points are high above the beach, yet the animals easily seen. Better yet to bring a pair of binoculars.
