Kawiti Caves, Northland Region

(4.8/5 based on 200+ reviews on the web)
Discover the magic of nature at Kawiti Caves, a set of limestone caves boasting enviable views of glowworm colonies and limestone rock formations. This mysterious set of caves and resident creatures began drawing visitors in the 1950s, when Te Tawai Kawiti (great grandson of the famous Maori chief Kawiti) started to offer tours built around a great deal of insight and respect for the natural world and its wonders. Stalactites and stalagmites add to the atmosphere of the caves, lit by the luminescence of the colony of worms. • We can highly recommend this tour! A skilled and charismatic guide showed us through the cave and told me about the gistoriken behind the cave, as well as information about the glow worms. The ride took about 30 minutes and was both affordable, fun and educational!
