Kawiti Caves, Northland Region
(4.8/5 based on 190+ reviews on the web)
Discover the magic of nature at Kawiti Caves, a set of limestone caves boasting enviable views of glowworm colonies and limestone rock formations. This mysterious set of caves and resident creatures began drawing visitors in the 1950s, when Te Tawai Kawiti (great grandson of the famous Maori chief Kawiti) started to offer tours built around a great deal of insight and respect for the natural world and its wonders. Stalactites and stalagmites add to the atmosphere of the caves, lit by the luminescence of the colony of worms. • Okay, I get really psyched about nature's unique ability to create entertainment for humans, just by doing what nature does. And the teeny, tiny worms in the cave really glow! Not just a little, a lot...  more »
  • For $20 it is well worth the visit. This is cheaper and just as good as other glow worm caves. The bush walk after the caves is beautiful, but be prepared for a uphill walk.
  • We drove past the caves on our way to Paihia and drove back a few days later. It was a personalized tour with a wealth of information on the Worms and caves. We are so glad we went on this tour at 20....  more »
