Kawiti Caves, Northland Region

(4.8/5 based on 220+ reviews on the web)
Discover the magic of nature at Kawiti Caves, a set of limestone caves boasting enviable views of glowworm colonies and limestone rock formations. This mysterious set of caves and resident creatures began drawing visitors in the 1950s, when Te Tawai Kawiti (great grandson of the famous Maori chief Kawiti) started to offer tours built around a great deal of insight and respect for the natural world and its wonders. Stalactites and stalagmites add to the atmosphere of the caves, lit by the luminescence of the colony of worms. • A short (200m) guided walk into the caves. You can get really close to the Glow-Worms and the caves would be worth a visit even without them! Good sized car park and track, although unsealed, was ok f...  more »
  • Very knowlegeable tour done by a family of locals, passionate about their job and heritage. Not very big but quite impressive, nice activity to do if you are in Paihia on a rainy day!  more »
