Lake Taupo, North Island
Categories: Bodies of Water, Nature & Parks
Lying in a caldera created thousands of years ago by a massive volcanic eruption, today Lake Taupo draws visitors with its wealth of sightseeing and recreational opportunities. The scenic lake ranks as New Zealand's largest by surface area, measuring 616 sq km (238 sq mi); naturally, there's plenty of room for water skiing, sailing, kayaking, and more. View the Maori rock carvings at Mine Bay from the water, or explore the shore along hiking and mountain bike trails next to the lake. For added excitement, look into skydiving or white-water rafting; alternatively, slow down the pace with a fishing trip or a dip into a natural thermal pool. The range of activities and onsite amenities ensure lots of fun for visitors of all ages. Our Taupo trip generator makes visiting Lake Taupo and other Taupo attractions simple, and helps you make a travel plan personal to you.
