Cape Reinga, North Island
(4.8/5 based on 380+ reviews on the web)
Marvel at land's end on rugged Cape Reinga, a wild peninsula at the far corner of the island where the Pacific Ocean and Tasman Sea meet. Travel out to the lighthouse for a sweeping view over the expanse of blue water, marked by occasionally roiling whitecaps where the ocean and sea touch. Continue out to the far tip of the cape to see the famed pohutukawa tree, which has supposedly stood at this location for more than eight centuries. This point remains an important fixture in Maori mythology, as it marks the spot where spirits leave this world during their journey to the afterlife. With our international travel planner, Kihikihi attractions like Cape Reinga can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.

  • Always pays to Cape Reinga off the long road! The road there suddenly ends at a parking lot, to the lighthouse, you must continue on foot. The path is well built, no problem if you are using a stroller! The view is absolutely beautiful! We were very lucky with the weather! I guess when it rains, it can be somewhat ungemühtlich with the wind. A must for every New Zealand travel!

  • It is impressive to see the clash between the Tasman Sea and the Pacific Ocean; you realize because it is a so sacred place for Maori culture.

  • Spent the day traveling up to Cape Reinga. Such a beautiful view and neat to see the two bodies of water converge with each other. A definite must see when on the North Island.
