Christ Church Cathedral, Nelson
(4.6/5 based on 160+ reviews on the web)
Visit Christ Church Cathedral, an impressive, modern place of worship located in the city center. Construction of the current building lasted from 1925 to 1965 and involved the sourcing of marble from the Pakikiruna Range and granite from Tonga Beach. The bell tower's elongated shape and skeletal form give great photo opportunities of the sky visible through the structure. Step inside to see the bright, bold stained glass windows. Whether you visit for spiritual or architectural reasons, the chapel represents a welcoming place for all. Do keep in mind, however, that it remains an active church, so be respectful of those who have come to worship. • After the settlement of the Pakeha, those settlers who traveled to the Islands to settle by order of Queen Victoria, during the 19TH century were responsible inter alia get churches and spread the Christian doctrine among the Polynesian settlers. At the beginning they were only a few, but Maori, quickly and easily embraced the new religion that had come from the other side of the world. So, the small church was insufficient, so the pastor travelled to England accompanied by the most powerful families of Nelson to ask the Queen for a bishopric which granted them independence. In Exchange the city would grow up to 5,000 souls. Got the permission of victory, they returned to Nelson and built a large church on the Hill, making the times of Cathedral, although it wasn't, and frequent earthquakes and termites objective was to be built of wood. Finally they decided to break down it and build a definitive in stone. He began to build in 1925 and took 40 years to complete, due to earthquakes, the second world war and especially the indecision on the materials to use, due to frequent earthquakes. Finally it was decided to lift it in marble, steel and concrete structure. A huge space that can accommodate 650 parishioners, a 35 metre high tower and brimming with bells, stained-glass windows that combine scenes of maori life, flora and fauna of Nelson, the religious of the city and historical facts, mingle with other purely doctrinal, as the one of the Apostles, a large rose window showing scenes from the old and New Testaments a body which was recently 60 years, and references everywhere to those Nelson soldiers who gave their lives to defend the peace of the Commonwealth. Undoubtedly what most draws the attention of the building is its exterior, with the iconic Bell Tower of concrete built in art deco-style late, combined with neo-Gothic from the rest of the temple which is at least challenging. In my personal opinion, but I like the mixture of styles, the Cathedral seems incomplete and our eyes don't seem to end up finding no symmetry between the parties. Anyway I deny that is beautiful and its Tower has something that makes it different from all that had not seen previously. The hill where dominates the city with the baton of Nelson Cathedral Tower

  • It is another cathedral though it does have some very nice cared for gardens. It is central to town.
  • We were in Nelson on a Sunday, so when we came to visit there was a small service going on. I loved hearing their songs as they echoed through the church. The stained glass inside was also very lovely...  more »

  • Pretty much in the centre of town set in some gardens. You can't miss this church. It's open for the public to go in if you want and you get some history on it. Relaxing way to spend an hour
