Christ Church Cathedral, Nelson

4.5
#3 of 6 in Sightseeing in Nelson-Tasman Region
Church Tourist Spot
Visit Christ Church Cathedral, an impressive, modern place of worship located in the city center. Construction of the current building lasted from 1925 to 1965 and involved the sourcing of marble from the Pakikiruna Range and granite from Tonga Beach. The bell tower's elongated shape and skeletal form give great photo opportunities of the sky visible through the structure. Step inside to see the bright, bold stained glass windows. Whether you visit for spiritual or architectural reasons, the chapel represents a welcoming place for all. Do keep in mind, however, that it remains an active church, so be respectful of those who have come to worship. • A special church on a hill, the tower with bell you can see it from far. The manager is very friendly and is happy to tell about "his" church.
  • Really pretty cathedral with some nice stain glass windows. Overlooks the main street in Nelson.
  • A Church with very different architecture to many churches. The artifacts inside are interesting and the lawns are nice to have a picnic on as long as it isn't rainy!
  • Great to look down the main street of town from the steps.
