Nelson Lakes National Park, Nelson-Tasman Region
Categories: National Parks, Nature & Parks
Large lakes and towering mountains give you an abundance of activities to choose from at Nelson Lakes National Park. The two main attractions, Lake Rotoroa and Lake Rotoiti, are popular spots for boating, water skiing, and fishing, especially since trout has been introduced to both bodies of water. Small communities can be found around the lakes along with fishing lodges and water taxi services. The encircling mountain ranges and valleys offer prime camping and hiking, with a large network of walking trails located around the park (try the most popular, the Travers-Sabine circuit). Explore these to see beech forests filled with native animal and plant life. A visitor's center in Saint Arnaud can keep you up to date about all aspects of the park. Many lovely walking paths, beautiful views, and, you can even see eels swimming under one of the docks.
We did the 7 hour tramp - the most enjoyable bush walk I've ever experienced! Though it might be good if all signs had the same information? Ie we left at 11.30 thinking a 5 hr tramp was the max - so we were surprised to still be tramping at a quick pace well after that. ( Afterwards we saw the sign in another car park that explained the max walk is 7+ hours ). STILL - we were out before dark and it was THE BEST bush walk I've been on! I'd do it again, thanks!!
