We visited in February, when most of the chicks were full-sized and starting to practice flapping their wings - really fun to watch. The birds nest all over the rock faces, right up to the viewing pla... more »
We went to Muriwai in January when the gannets are breeding. Nice views and lovely beach. Good for fishing too. Surprisingly, the washrooms were dirty. more »
An incredible privilege to be able to watch the Gannets nesting on the beautiful cliff side. Parking down in Muriwai and hiking up the steps on the headland the interpretive signs give some insight to the colony and the surrounding area before unveiling a scene of nesting Gannets. We were lucky enough to see plenty of young chicks ready to take to the skies also. Definitely worth checking out.
I am a local West Aucklander and I love this place. I never get sick of watching these beautiful birds in this amazing environment and go every year. It's a must view for visitors to Auckland, right here on our doorstep and few places in the world to see them. Take a picnic, do a beach walk or part of the Hilary Trail down the coast and watch the sunset over the ocean. It is paradise here.
In late December and January the fluffy young chicks are in their nests. It is always great to see them clinging to the steep and narrow cliff edge. It is also good to visit on a windy day and watch the parent birds hover effortlessly onto their nesting sites. It is an easy walk from the carpark to the closest viewing platform and not much further to the next viewing platform. Both platforms also provide stunning views out across the Tasman Sea with the rollers forming well offshore and crashing on the rocks at the base of the cliffs. There are seats provided that give a view North up the beach where in the foreground the surfers, kite surfers and swimmers can be seen and the long expanse of the 52 kilometre beach fades in the salt spray haze of the background.
Head towards Maori Bay. The view is better and it's less touristy. Nice short walk down the hill. Best visited at low tide. There's a nice cafe for refreshments and public amenities.
Well worth the drive out there to see them. There is a mix of babies & ones now stretching their wings, getting ready to fly. The viewing platforms are just above them. So easy to see & photograph.
