Went here to photograph the gannet colony and wasn't disappointed. To get good shots of the gannets you'll need at least a 300mm lens; bigger if you want some close ups. The birds are nesting at the m...  more »

Visiting the Gannet Colony at Muriwai Beach and Maukatia Bay is an unforgettable experience. The perfect place to experience the West Coast's charmingly beautiful and rough character. The wildlife is ...  more »

  • Pick your time here wisely. A very popular place to go and not much parking. Highly recommended. If you want to swim do so at your own discretion, and between the flags. Gannets are amazing!
  • Nice short walk uphill to a headland where you can get pretty close to the gannets. Can be accessed from the north and south so can be done as a loop. The path is well formed, but does involve steps from the northern side.
  • Very easy access with walkways. You can get really up close. It is an easy walk and suitable for everyone. However, it might not be that wheelchair friendly or if you're dependent on a walking apparatus. The birds nests for a very short time. So best to go between Feb - March. You can visit Muriwai beach before or after you come here. It's a surfing beach and not suitable for swimming.
  • Very rare seen. Colony of Gannet birds. Can enjoy whole family. Specially for kids. Very much educational. This is located next to the Muriwai beach & you have climb up if you are coming from the beach side. Wooden steps available.
  • It was okay.. the smell of a bunch of birds meeting was less than pleasant but that's to be expected. Your often just feet away from the birds, so it's great for pictures.
