Create an itinerary including Mount Maunganui Summit Track
Breathe in the fresh air and admire the amazing views of the Bay of Plenty on Mount Maunganui Summit Track. Rising up to 232 m (761 ft), this extinct volcanic cone was once used by the Maori as a natural fortification; today, locals and visitors alike flock here for a day in nature. Several tracks lead to the cone's summit, and depending on the one you choose, the hike to the top might take approximately 30 minutes to an hour. In general, the treks are not too difficult, but on a hot day it's important to properly protect yourself from the sun and bring sufficient water supplies, because there are no sources of drinking water on site. • If you have a moderate scale of fitness the top of the Mount is worth the effort but for a more relaxing stroll, go around the base.

  • We climbed the 232-metre high Mount Maunganui at the end of the isthmus for fabulous views all round. It rises very steeply, but there is a variety of routes up, some suitable for wheelchairs. We...

  • Well worth the effort to get to the top. I Recommend taking a pause on the way up and take in the views which appear at each turn. It was pretty hot on the day I climbed so take water to keep hydrated. Decent was harder than the ascent. Pretty slippery at stages. Not a real issue, just take care. An awesome view from the top
  • A nice wall up. Take your time, can be a bit strenuous. Shade more at the top and going down than on the way up. Take the steps up and walk ocean side going down. Beautiful views both ways. Take your water with you as there is no fountain or anything at the top. There are bathrooms at the base, so go before you start. Parking duringnsummer holidays can be hard so I recommend going early, park as you can and walk. Going early will also help to beat the heat and the crowds. Enjoy!
  • Amazing views of ocean and surrounds was clear day when visited. Requires effort to complete so some degree of fitness although you could rest if needed. Decent shoes for walking. Don't forget some water, there is no toilet only at bottom across roads from shops same side as sea/mount. Parking can be a bit scarce as quiet popular.
  • Banging good views at almost every point of the walk. Steep at certain sections but definitely doable on average fitness. Definitely a must do if you're around the area. Enter the trail via either side is fine. Parking all around.
  • When you live in a beautiful country, you got to make most of it. No visit to Mt Maunganui is complete without climbing the summit of the Mount. The access is from the beachside and there are two options to climb to the top. Ones a short one but is steep and has loads of steps. The other is a longer one but few steps and mostly a gravel track. Recommend the steps for the fit as the views are amazing.
