Ngarua Caves, Motueka

4.8
#1 of 11 in Nature in Nelson-Tasman Region
Marvel at the variety of stalagmites and stalactites in Ngarua Caves, a cave system with easy access and well-lit walkways. Learn about the extinct moa (an endemic flightless bird) and even spot some of their bones left behind. Guided tours are offered regularly in the summer, but during winter, advanced reservation is required. When you've finished exploring, relax at the onsite cafe and admire the views of Tasman Bay. Local crafts in the gift shop make great souvenirs. Ask Inspirock to suggest an itinerary and make planning a trip to Motueka fast, fun, and easy.

  • The guided tour through these caves is excellent. The caves are magnificent - best I've seen in NZ. Track through the caves is well marked. Well worth the $20 entry fee.  more »
  • It was a nice experience to visit the caves. The stories are great and the most interesting part is the Moa Bones, the experience of the dark in the cave and the connnection of the family to the place...  more »

  • Well worth going to. I think our guides name was Ann (I can't remember). This is her passion, and field of expertise. she was so knowledgeable stopping every now and again throughout the tour to explain the features inside etc. We were told us so much it was amazing and she even sang in the caves so we could hear the acoustics. Not all guides do this apparently but she is more than happy to if you ask. Great caves to visit easy stroll ,suitable for almost everyone, with lighting all the way through. You can take photos too. Moa bones on display in there too. No glow worms in these caves because of the type of caves they are but heaps of Stalactites and Stalagmites.
  • Really beautiful cave system with a well laid out track. The steps and signage were good and although you are not allowed to touch the structures (as is in most tour caves) every so often a 'touch spot' is set up with a designated area to feel the formations. The tour business is family owned and the guides stop the tour every now and then and give a great detailed explanation of the features inside the cave. Nice cafe included in the main building.
  • If you are passing call in nice caves old graffiti from early settlers bone's from extinct birds, nice pie's in the cafe.
  • Really interesting cave tour. Not too long under ground but some very nice formations. Pity about the guides dry sense of humour!
  • Educational and fun. We held an actual Moa thigh bone! Amazing journey.
