Katiki Point Lighthouse, Moeraki

(140+ reviews on the web)
Lighthouse Tourist Spot
Visit the southern point of Moeraki Peninsula at Katiki Point Lighthouse, home to fur seals and yellow-eyed penguins. Take a tour of the historical lighthouse that dates from 1878 and enjoy the magnificent coastal views. Enter a reserve and view a breeding site for yellow-eyed penguins from a bird hide, where you can observe with disturbing the animals. Remember to keep noise to a minimum and remain off the beach. Keep your eyes peeled for native fur seals, too, which laze on rocky platforms around the coast. If you go to fish, be sure to use the designated coastal access point. • Decided to visit because we were so close to Moeraki. Definitely a fun thing to do. If you had mobility issues probably not recommended because of the terrain to get there.  more »
  • This is where i got to see my first penguin. So cool. It was late after about 3pm and a few were coming out of the water. If you walk all the way to the end of the penisula there are numerous fur seal...  more »
  • Very good road to the light house and then refreshing stroll down to the peninsular, penguins were on view as were the seals. An accidental stop, but very satisfying. The afternoon light across the ba...  more »

  • A very easy walk to be with nature. The road is mostly unsealed and narrow in parts. It was a sunny day when we went there and the seals were out basking in the sun. The reserve opens at 7:30am. My husband was amazed that there were penguins up and about, literally walking in the pathway. Of course we didn't disturb them by getting in the way. We were mere spectators, respecting their space and enjoying the sun.
  • After visiting Curio Bay and Roaring Bay we were keen to see penguins and Katiki Point was the only place we saw them. There's plenty of seals and bunnies as well, highly recommended if you want to see some wildlife.
  • This was an amazing place to stop at. We got there at about 6pm and got to see all the seals resting and playing all around the peninsula as well as quite a few yellow eyed penguins.
  • Amazing place. Go early in the morning, 8 am and walk between penguins, seals and sea lions.
