Martinborough Vineyard, Martinborough

4.0
#7 of 13 in Wineries in Greater Wellington
Established in 1992 by Graham and Daryl Margrain, Margrain Vineyard has quietly cultivated a reputation for producing a wide range of exceptional wines that exude complexity and charm while offering great cellaring potential.

From the outset, the company's aim has been to grow top quality grapes and produce wines of excellence. In pursuit of this goal no compromise has been made.

Margrain is an ideal one stop vineyard experience: offering accommodation in the striking Margrain Vineyard Villas, as well as conference and function facilities, Cellar Door, The Vineyard Cafe and The Vineyard and Winery Tour.

  • We visited this winery and had the chance to not only try the wines but we were also given a short tour around the vineyard. One of the pioneer vineyards in Martinborough, there is a lot of history go...  more »
  • We did not join a wine tour, bur was certain that we should visit this winery. It was a good experience and we even had the possibility to bring with us a couple of bottles.  more »
  • Very good wines and nice service. This would be on my top three list for Martinborough. Others include Palliser and Schubert.  more »

  • Great friendly service, knowledgeable & helpful hosts. Lovely wine & gin, best winery of the day!
  • Most disgusting service we have ever experienced. We arrived with no booking and instantly she had a change in attitude as if we were a annoyance simply by being there. When one of our girls asked what colours they have (she is not knowledgeable on wine) as she doesn't like reds. She was promptly told she was to drunk to be served "becouse she asked a question like that" when she actually was sober. We told the lady this and were kicked out for "back chatting". Worst experience ever and the most obnoxious host.
  • We (group of 2) loved the two wines we tasted - the Pinot Gris (a little warm) and the Sav Blanc - but after 10 minutes with an empty glass we decided to leave. With only one other group tasting at the time we managed to walk out without acknowledgement. I don't understand how one server can neglect other customers with such dedication but I may have to put my jacket on Trademe as an invisibility cloak. That should provide me plenty of $ to spend at the other great cellar doors in Martinborough, which can manage more than 1 group of tasters at a time.
  • Good and bad. Good because the wine is always good, the setting is lovely and there is a good story to tell my tour customers. Bad because without Neil you do not have someone behind the tasting bar that can do an interesting tasting AND sell your wine. 5 wines were tasted in about 10 minutes and then we were out the door, and the place was not busy. No-one can make a buying decision in those circumstances.
  • Great wines with a great story.
