Mount John University Observatory, Lake Tekapo

(4.6/5 based on 400+ reviews on the web)
Gaze into the outer reaches of the universe at Mount John University Observatory, an astrological center offering day and night tours of its facilities, plus the opportunity to use the telescope to spot the moon, stars, and other planets. The top of Mt. John makes an ideal location for this observatory thanks to the superior visibility afforded by the expansive landscape and the lack of manmade light from the surrounding area. Established in 1960, the center hosts some of the world's leading astronomical research programs. Visitors have the chance to marvel at the wonders of space and the largest telescope in New Zealand, accompanied along the way by knowledgeable staff. • to have created this no-smoking area. But it is not enough, so a little monitor, and predict a fine! The smoker is smart, clever for a wreck. It is revolting. I found a stub on the route walking "tour of the Summit". What a shame. Part teaching on the geomorphology and wildlife (I've only seen rabbits) but nothing about astronomy, the kind of research that are made here, the need to protect the darkness as a resource in an era where the Badgers last seems to have a screwed headlamp on the head from the dark...

  • We visited in the morning there is a charge of eight dollars to drive up to summit. There were a number of telescopes, which I was told are the best in NZ. Night time visit would be best.  more »
  • Through the forward Lake hiking trails, walk to the Observatory, climbed. It is very large and very good course. Climbed the last steep slope, but is waiting for further views with the Observatory.
