Church of the Good Shepherd, Lake Tekapo
Categories: Churches, Tourist Spots
Experience the scenic surroundings of Lake Tekapo by visiting Church of the Good Shepherd, one of New Zealand's most famous and photographed churches. Dating back to the 1930s, the church sits on the shore of the lake and commemorates the pioneers of Mackenzie County. Recognizable by its unassuming yet charming design, the church blends with its natural surroundings and only locally available materials were used during its construction. Once inside, take in impressive views of the lake through the windows--deliberately left without stained glass for this very purpose. The church welcomes visitors and worshipers throughout the year. Over looking Lake Tekapo. It's a great photo opportunity but you have to be patient to get a photo without other people in it as it's a very popular tourist spot.
Go early in the morning to avoid the tourists. Some great photo opportunities with the sun coming up.
Peaceful beautiful church with great view of Lake Tekapo. One of the most beautiful place in New Zealand and definitely the most photographed church in NZ. Given its fame, the place is packed with tourists most of the time. Just wish that the Asian tourists be more respectful to the peaceful environment around. If you don't like the crowd, suggest to drive to Mount John Observatory for the 360 panorama view of Tekapo.
Was locked, we were too early. It was peaceful and cold. Rabbit was quietly nibbling grass outside and wasn't scared of us.
Very popular tourist spot. Nice church by Lake Tekapo. Worth a visit but can be very crowded.
Small building with great views of Lake Tekapo especially around sunset. I would put this along side Lake Wanaka in terms of views. A very pretty lake to see. If you are passing through you got to stop and admire the view.
Amazing view. a must visit. Traveled from Christchurch to Queenstown via Tekapo and had a stop here. Beautiful building and backdrop.
