Church of the Good Shepherd, Lake Tekapo

Experience the scenic surroundings of Lake Tekapo by visiting Church of the Good Shepherd, one of New Zealand's most famous and photographed churches. Dating back to the 1930s, the church sits on the shore of the lake and commemorates the pioneers of Mackenzie County. Recognizable by its unassuming yet charming design, the church blends with its natural surroundings and only locally available materials were used during its construction. Once inside, take in impressive views of the lake through the windows--deliberately left without stained glass for this very purpose. The church welcomes visitors and worshipers throughout the year. • It is a small church on the shores of Lake tekapo. Just now I almost see around, apparently will be ravaged by the tourists. But it is a small church.

  • Stunning location in winter. Sheer Beauty! Such a wonderful place to visit with friends during an adventure trip. A must do in South Island New Zealand. Cafe nearby on top of the hill is stunning too
  • A quaint little building, sitting on a tiny hill that gives you great views of Lake Tekapo. If you've got some free time, why not check it out? There's also a suspension bridge a short walk away, facing a dam on one side, and Lake Tekapo on the other. Worth a visit if you're here, since it's so close anyway.
  • Nice little stone church on a beautiful spot. Its charm make this place so much popular that is sometimes very crowded. There are buses full of tourist stopping literally in front of the church every five minutes. Sometimes very hard to take a picture without a selfiestick in your way. After all worth a visit.
  • Very serene spot with a spectacular view. Quite calming too because there are no photo or video taking allowed within the Church, so not as much people inside. Good place to just be in awe and pray. Appreciate the lovely music as well. (The Heart of Worship was playing back then)
  • The church of the good shepherd is a an iconic church looking of lake Tekapo. On a clear day you can see Mt Cook and the view over the lake is breathtaking. Tekapo is a popular tourist spot and they now also have hotpools which also look over the lake. It worth at least a day's stop if not a night.
