The Stone Store & Kemp House - Kerikeri Mission Station 1822, Kerikeri

4.5
#2 of 15 in Historic Sites in Northland Region
New Zealand's oldest surviving stone building, The Stone Store & Kemp House - Kerikeri Mission Station 1822 replaced an earlier wood structure in the 1830s. Constructed by mason William Parrott and a team of Maori workers, the building served as a trading post of a missionary community. The store sold farm produce to passing ships, and European goods to the local Maori population. Today, the well-preserved building offers local souvenirs and serves as the starting point for tours of the nearby mission house, another structure dating from the first half of the 19th century. Just uphill from here you can join a signposted historical walk leading to a wooden Anglican church, a photogenic building erected in 1878. Nice bit of history here although $8 to view the upstairs part seems a little steep for what’s there. Maybe a $20 family pass would be a better option.  more »

Spent a couple of enjoyable hours here. Fascinated by the history and relaxed by the water. Stopped for refreshments at the Pear Tree and shopped at the Stone Store. All definitely worth visiting.  more »

Wonderful historic village. Beautiful walking tracks. Has little areas for a bbq, can swim, fish and has a cafe by the stone house. Beautiful views, ducks and chickens to welcome you for memorable visit. Can bring dogs but not on walking tracks. Worth a visit when up north🙂👍

. (03/2017) Oldest stone building in New Zealand. Interesting history and maintaining a vintage look. Store is very well preserved and filled with retro stuff. Helpful staff who are dressed in period attire. Overall setup encompasses a church, garden, port, harbour, an old tree and a house An unforgettable experience.
