Indisputably one of New Zealand's most unusual attractions, Kawakawa Public Toilets by Hundertwasser represent an international work of art. Designed by reclusive Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser, this block of public restrooms features trademark wavy lines, irregular ceramic tiles, and splashes of bright color. The architect made extensive use of recycled materials, including the community's spent glass bottles and bricks from a former Bank of New Zealand branch. • These public toilets are incredible. Such amazing design makes it a pleasure to use the public toilets. They are so colourful and unusual that it is definitely worth a visit. A very clever designer...  more »
  • I was skeptical about this tourist attraction. the photos make it look like.. a funky toilet, but still.. a toilet. However, what a pleasant surprise! Its more than a cool toilet, this is functional.....  more »
  • Yeah they are quirky, but I'm not quite sure what all the fuss is about and wouldn't go out of my way to see them. Maybe growing up in Coromandel, where plastering used wine bottles into walls was...  more »

  • I'm totally inspired by these amazing toilets. Who would have thought a town could become an attraction because of its toilets? These toilets look like they were made on a budget from excess tiles. I love the glass bottles set into the walls. They not only provide light but are an attractive feature too. The funky iron gates lock these toilets at night. There's signage to read about how the toilets came to be. This man's work is an inspiration to everyone who wants to use their imagination & skills to do something for their community. The same theme has spilled over into a few shops in the town too.
  • Excellent tourist attraction in Kawakawa. Hide all valuables and lock your vehicle before venturing out. Floor surface is heavily cobbled and potentially a trip hazard for elderly. Regrettably to odour of these facilities is not pleasant and may cause offence. Council should consider this issue. Located centrally in the town, cafes and hotels close by and souvenir shops etc. Old historic train runs through the middle of town at regular intervals.
  • I stopped at this place during my Northland trip. This rating is purely for the architecture and the artwork. Artistic and creative usage of colourful tiles, glass, mirror, bottles etc can be seen here. However, these are public toilets and need proper cleanliness and maintenance. I would however still suggest you to visit it just to see the work! Cheers
  • Awesome place to visit when visiting the area. Amazing tile work.
  • Always a joy to use this facility. Always seems to be ample parking around this facility. Always clean, and the colourful designs is quite a pleasant relief after long driving. Its is also close by to eatery and cafes. Good time for a break off the road.
