Kawakawa Public Toilets by Hundertwasser, Kawakawa

#1 of 7 in Things to do in Kawakawa
Indisputably one of New Zealand's most unusual attractions, Kawakawa Public Toilets by Hundertwasser represent an international work of art. Designed by reclusive Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser, this block of public restrooms features trademark wavy lines, irregular ceramic tiles, and splashes of bright color. The architect made extensive use of recycled materials, including the community's spent glass bottles and bricks from a former Bank of New Zealand branch. • It's a public toilet. It was very clean when we used it. You can clearly see many of the typical Hundertwasser elements in the construction. It's a quick fun stop but I wouldn't queue for it.  more »

  • The mosaics are lovely. They are worth a visit if you are in the area. They didn't blow me away. But if you enjoy his work you might enjoy it more. There is also a gift shop dedicated to him and some more of his mosaics around the town. Wouldn't go out of my way to see them though.
  • Work of art and functional, you will not see another toilet like it. Spend sometime looking at all the detail like the hand made tiles by local school children, you will find special detail everywhere. Always clean and well looked aftered.
  • What a wonderful place. Aesthetics at its best in a public toilet. I fell in love with the place and the town. Does anyone know about the history of these toilets?
  • Always looks and smells clean. Close to really good cafes. Lots of off street parking. Good place for photos!
  • Really amazing. Toilet stalls are open at top and bottom of the doors. The whole village is photo worthy.
