Hundertwasser Public Toilets, Kawakawa

(280+ reviews on the web)
Indisputably one of New Zealand's most unusual attractions, Hundertwasser Public Toilets represent an international work of art. Designed by reclusive Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser, this block of public restrooms features trademark wavy lines, irregular ceramic tiles, and splashes of bright color. The architect made extensive use of recycled materials, including the community's spent glass bottles and bricks from a former Bank of New Zealand branch. • We wanted to visit the Kawiti Glow Worm Cave as an excursion from a cruise ship, and this was a part of every tour we looked at. I tried to leave this off and substitute something else in, but that wa...  more »
  • Heading North you drive through Kawakawa and these quirky loos are amazing - the interior being just as eyecatching as the outside - mosaic tiles and coloured glass. The town makes a good comfort stop...  more »
  • I know tourists love to find a toilet but this crazy toilet is not only clean and well located, but it is spectacular, arty, like a bit of Gaudi in the far north of NZ. What a clever town Kawakawa is,...  more »
  • . (03/2017) Not just a usual toilet space and in fact before seeing this one, I never had thought that one day I'll be writing a review for a toilet. This place is well decorated with different kind of bottles as a tourist attraction with interesting history behind it and beautiful artistic work from an artist with the same name. Located in middle of roadside Kawakawa market area. Quite an elusive structure.
  • Very cool. Very artistic. However an in use set of public toilets with all the things you would expect
  • If your an art lover and love to recycle...I highly recommend you check out these toilets and Hinder reasserted style and will blow your mind!!!
  • Strange toilet, I do not know why everyone is so lyrical about it. But for a pee it's OK.
  • An awesome place to stop for a toilet break with a few quirky cafes and gift shops also close by.
