Originally used as a runway for early airmail services, Ninety Mile Beach now serves as a major tourist destination, offering spectacular sunsets and arguably the finest left-hand surf breaks in New Zealand. Stretching for approximately 88 km (55 mi), this seemingly never-ending beach features a series of sand dunes where you can perfect your bodyboarding skills or dig for tuatua (native shellfish) at low tide. Each year the beach hosts a popular fishing competition, welcoming anglers eager to catch the biggest snapper. A lush pine forest grows within walking distance of the beach, providing a green backdrop to the white sands of the coastline.
