Peninsula Seal Colony, Kaikoura

(4.7/5 based on 200+ reviews on the web)
Take a short drive out of Kaikoura to explore South Bay's Peninsula Seal Colony. An abundance of well laid-out walkways grant you easy access to the surrounding landscape. Extending about 11.7 km (7.3 mi), it takes about 3 hours to complete. The stars of the peninsula are most definitely the flourishing community of seals going about their daily business and soaking up the sun; keep a respectful distance, however, for your own safety. Dolphins, whales, and crayfish also populate the sea here. A short hike to the Point Kean lookout rewards with a full panoramic view of the bay, Kaikoura town, and the towering snowcapped mountains encircling the area. • Such an amazing place to see seals, however you must be careful because they are wild, and do need space! I took some great photos here on my old conventional slr which I am yet to develop in my dark ...  more »
  • Here you will get close to the seals. They come up from the water so you get them right beside you. Remeber that they are wild animals and can easily bit of a finger  more »
  • You can walk out on the offshore rocks well and safely. Flip-flops are not suitable! The seals lie comfortably in the Sun, stretch and stretch themselves or scratching! You should get you not too close. When a visitor tried it, a dangerous-sounding ROAR heard was immediately! You get so sufficiently good snapshots! Fun to watch as they sensationally mobile frolic in the water and play with each other!
