Peninsula Seal Colony, Kaikoura
(4.6/5 based on 190+ reviews on the web)
Take a short drive out of Kaikoura to explore South Bay's Peninsula Seal Colony. An abundance of well laid-out walkways grant you easy access to the surrounding landscape. Extending about 11.7 km (7.3 mi), it takes about 3 hours to complete. The stars of the peninsula are most definitely the flourishing community of seals going about their daily business and soaking up the sun; keep a respectful distance, however, for your own safety. Dolphins, whales, and crayfish also populate the sea here. A short hike to the Point Kean lookout rewards with a full panoramic view of the bay, Kaikoura town, and the towering snowcapped mountains encircling the area. By using our Kaikoura trip itinerary maker, you can arrange your visit to Peninsula Seal Colony and other attractions in Kaikoura.

  • The walks are fascinating, the seals can be seen in many places and also at close proximity. Beware and respect their spaces, then they will respect you. Beautiful animals and a wonderful experience I...  more »
  • Seriously, up close! I almost walked on one! This is a really nice spot for an afternoon wander. Just walking around, saying hi to the seals, taking some photos. The rock pools are lovely as well. Ver...  more »
  • The seals were easy to see at the Kaikorua peninsula and easy to combine with a walk on the peninsula.
