Ohau Waterfall Walk and Seal Pups, Kaikoura
(4.7/5 based on 1,300+ reviews on the web)
Take a short and easy hike along Ohau Waterfall Walk and Seal Pups for beautiful scenery and up-close encounters with some adorable creatures. The 280 m (918.6 ft) walk passes through a forested area alongside Ohau Stream and leads to a small pool and picturesque waterfall flanked by green, mossy stones. In winter months seals and their pups also follow the stream in from the ocean; look for them playing and swimming in the water and lounging on nearby rocks. The hike is very manageable and a great choice for families traveling with children, who will be delighted to see the friendly creatures. Don't forget to take your camera to capture the surrounding scenery and special moments with the seals. Even if it isn't the season for the seals, this still makes a lovely, brief excursion. • The car park at the sea is always well stocked, but you get to see something out of the ordinary. This is less to do with the small waterfall, which can be reached after a brief climb on a small path through the jungle. Rather, it is the fur seals, which repeatedly up marching in the river and then on the road or at the waterfall itself stop.
