One of New Zealand's most unusual beaches, Hot Water Beach gets its name from the underground hot springs that filter up through the sand here. In the four-hour low tide period, visitors to the beach dig into the sand to allow hot water to reach the surface and create their own thermal spa pools. Don't worry if you haven't brought a shovel--you can buy or rent one from the nearby surf shop. Please exercise caution at all times as the hot springs sit close to the sea and bathers can be caught unawares by large waves even at low tide.
