#Hot Spring, #Beach, #Must See
One of New Zealand's most unusual beaches, Hot Water Beach gets its name from the underground hot springs that filter up through the sand here. In the four-hour low tide period, visitors to the beach dig into the sand to allow hot water to reach the surface and create their own thermal spa pools. Don't worry if you haven't brought a shovel--you can buy or rent one from the nearby surf shop. Please exercise caution at all times as the hot springs sit close to the sea and bathers can be caught unawares by large waves even at low tide. • Hot Water Beach is bun-fight even on a quiet day. We had the choice between a 7am and 8pm low tide so we went early at 6am and yes, there were plenty of people there but we had a chance to stake some ...  more »
  • We arrived and first didn't know what to do and just started digging - in the wrong place obviously. Try to find a spot where you dig your feet into the sand and you can feel warm water / warm sand. T...  more »

  • Beautiful place! Hot spring meets the cool ocean. Best time to go is two hours before or after low tide. Be sure to find the hot water source first (the sand will be hot in that area). Dig a hole, add some cool ocean water to make the temp comfortable and jump in. Be careful with little kids as water can get very hot in certain areas.
  • One of the the most bizarre things I’ve experienced. The beach water is cold but the holes (if you dig one over a hot stream) are boiling hot. With this being said you need to go during low tide because the area with hot water is lower on the beach. We went around 4 and the beach was flooded with people. You could buy your own shovel, which I suggest doing if you go first thing in the morning. If you’re going later on, I wouldn’t bother because there are so many extra shovels lying around.
  • It's fun to dig your own hole to hang in. Works very well, even too hot at places

Where to stay in Hot Water Beach

Hot Water Beach itself offers only a handful of accommodations, with two bed and breakfasts and a campground to choose from. If you can't find a place to stay within the township itself, look north to the popular coastal destination of Hahei, which offers a wider selection of options. From there, you can easily visit Hot Water Beach on a day trip.
