The National Kiwi Centre, Hokitika

(160+ reviews on the web)
Zoo / Aquarium Nature / Park
Spot the small, flightless bird called the kiwi at The National Kiwi Centre, an indoor facility that reproduces the creature's natural environment. As the country's national symbol, the bird became so iconic that New Zealanders themselves are known as "Kiwis." In addition to kiwis, the site also houses long-finned eels, which visitors can help feed several times a day. Be sure to look for the tuatara, the world's oldest living dinosaur. This scaly reptile is only found in the wild in New Zealand and lives up to 100 years. Put The National Kiwi Centre at the forefront of your travel plans using our Hokitika tourist route planner.

  • This place is a little run down and old but you can see a Kiwi up close in the dark. We happened to park across the street when looking for a spot to have lunch on a rainy day while passing down the W...  more »
  • Wonderful set up. Very informative especially on native fish and of course the KIWI which is a little hard to see in the dark. Catch and return indoor pond with NZ native freshwater crayfish (koura). ...  more »
  • It may be a bit hodge podge but it is well worth the cost when you arrive around feeding time. We saw the kiwi bird before for a good 15 minutes, fed the eels, caught crayfish and then saw the kiwis a...  more »

  • Worth it just for the Kiwi. However, there's so much more than just the Kiwi, there's eel feeding, crayfish pond and so much more. Well worth the small admission price.
  • Great place to see and hold the kiwi birds but the entry free is 24 $ for adults. So expensive. I didn't go inside. 😤
  • A fantastic experience, and not just for the kiwis: I highly recommend visiting for the eel feeding, where you can hand feed and even pet the giant eels. The staff are friendly and informative, and the centre houses a wealth of information on NZ's wildlife.
  • This place needs to be renovated urgently! Some aquarium are under construction and obviously not since a few days... lots of other aquarium are decorated with plastic plants and look really sad. Not to mention the poor kiwis. Can't find any conservation value and went out with a really sad feeling about the animals there.
  • Excellent experience. Saw giant eels and kiwis that were very active. Totally worth it! A+++
