Stroll along the unspoiled sands of Hokitika Beach and look for interesting driftwood washed ashore while admiring views of New Zealand's tallest mountain, Mount Cook. Driftwood plays an important role on the beach, where every January artists flock to take part in a driftwood and sand beach sculpture festival. Participants create art from anything they find on the beach, and these pieces usually remain viewable up to two weeks afterwards until the sea claims them again. Also search the sand for pounamu, the country's version of jade, and look for native wildlife like sunbathing seals. Hokitika Beach is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our international travel planner, Hokitika Edition.
