Hokitika Beach, Hokitika
(4.1/5 based on 240+ reviews on the web)
Stroll along the unspoiled sands of Hokitika Beach and look for interesting driftwood washed ashore while admiring views of New Zealand's tallest mountain, Mount Cook. Driftwood plays an important role on the beach, where every January artists flock to take part in a driftwood and sand beach sculpture festival. Participants create art from anything they find on the beach, and these pieces usually remain viewable up to two weeks afterwards until the sea claims them again. Also search the sand for pounamu, the country's version of jade, and look for native wildlife like sunbathing seals. Hokitika Beach is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our international travel planner, Hokitika Edition.

  • This is not in our itenary until our guesthouse host recommend it to us, and it's great! Be sure you check out the local time for sunset before heading there. It's located right behind the main street...  more »
  • An interesting beach, festooned with driftwood which makes it look somewhat dishevelled but photogenic because of that.
  • A really nice place to view the sunset. There were about over 100 people gathered to watch the sunset.
