Te Mata Peak, Hastings

Climb Te Mata Peak to the lookout point for bracing air and spectacular views. The 399 m (1,309 ft) high peak provides a great vantage point for the surrounding area, including the Heretaunga Plains and Hawke's Bay. Many short and longer trails for hiking and mountain biking crisscross the peak, with options for beginning, intermediate, and advanced hikers. The site has significance in Maori legend, and archeological research in the surrounding park suggests it was heavily settled at some point by indigenous communities. European settlers largely deforested the peak and surrounding area, which is now a combination of rocky cliffs and green rolling hills and valleys. Use Inspirock's suggestions to plan your Hastings trip and find the best activities and attractions for your vacation.

  • You can take the easy way and drive to the top or walk one of the many circuits .I chose the longest route which the locals call the goat track. It was exhilarating with a few challenges on all fours c...  more »
  • What an amazing place to visit. Even the drive up to the top is impressive, it's a very narrow road which you share with the many that choose the big hike to the top. The view is spectacular and truly...  more »

  • One of the best places in NZ for views. We ran up to the peak; not easy in the heat but very satisfying at each little view point, and worth getting to the peak.
  • Took the blue route up and was a pleasant 40 minute walk! The top offered possibly some of the best views I have seen from a mountain range in all my days! Had the privilege of meeting a local for a brief chat.
  • Just a 15 minute drive from Craggy Range this view point cannot be missed. It was stunning. Much better than Bluff Hill in Napier. We went on a very cloudy day and the views were still absolutely breathtaking. You can drive up (which is what we did) or walk up. However you get there, it will be well worth it.
  • Stunning panoramic 360 views. You're able to drive right up to the top and enjoy the view for those not able to walk up steep inclines. Also makes it easy to bring the little ones up for the family to enjoy
  • No time? No problem, just drive up to the top and enjoy stunning views. Will do the tracks some day!
