Te Mata Peak, Hastings

Categories: Mountains, Lookouts, Tourist Spots, Nature & Parks
Inspirock Rating:
4.9/5 based on 1,100+ reviews on the web
Climb Te Mata Peak to the lookout point for bracing air and spectacular views. The 399 m (1,309 ft) high peak provides a great vantage point for the surrounding area, including the Heretaunga Plains and Hawke's Bay. Many short and longer trails for hiking and mountain biking crisscross the peak, with options for beginning, intermediate, and advanced hikers. The site has significance in Maori legend, and archeological research in the surrounding park suggests it was heavily settled at some point by indigenous communities. European settlers largely deforested the peak and surrounding area, which is now a combination of rocky cliffs and green rolling hills and valleys.
