Cathedral Cove Walk, Hahei

Spend a day surrounded by breathtaking beaches, a crystal-clear sea, lush vegetation, and impressive rock formations at Cathedral Cove Walk. The cove's most prominent feature is the towering natural archway that connects two scenic bays. Its sandy beaches are perfect for relaxing by the sea, while the abundance of marine life makes the cove a great snorkeling destination. No roads lead to the cove, so you can access it either by a hiking trail or from the sea. Even though the hike to the cove is not too long or difficult, make sure to wear appropriate footwear and bring sufficient supplies of food and water--the beaches are in a protected area and don't have any facilities. With our custom trip planner, Hahei attractions like Cathedral Cove Walk can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.

  • I walked to Cathedral Cove from the carpark at the top of the hill. It stated a 45 minute moderate walk. I walk fast so it was 30 minutes there and 30 minutes back. Well worth it! The scenery along th...  more »
  • It was a stormy windy day threathening with rain when we visited here. My husband daughter of 11 did this walk. It was lovely with lots of stops along the way where you can rest or sit. Don't forget y...  more »
  • I really enjoyed have gone at the end of a fall afternoon. Although I was only in the mood to get in the water, since it was freezing, I think the combination and autumn evening helped to enjoy the place with few people. The parking lot, the trail indicates that to reach 45 or 35 minutes walk takes you, I don't remember for sure, but if you have a good rhythm of walking can do it under, was quick to arrive. Tired a little bit on the climbs, mainly on the back, but it's quiet. As is the beach, you don't pay anything to enter, which is also great. I saw some cars of Eka (an agency of sightseeing) parked there, so should organize tours to the beach.

  • The destination is worth the hike, but not for the unfit!! We read a lot about the change in parking arrangements prior to our visit so parked in the new public car park and walked the roadway up to the top of the hill to start the trail. There is a bus to take you up and we would certainly recommend that if you have any health issues. The Walk itself involves a fair amount of hills and steps (in the final section before you reach the Cove) so conserve your energy. We had overcast weather but it was still lovely to see & it wasn't mobbed!
  • A great walk with stunning views along the way. We found there was no parking up at the signed car park for Cathedral cove so instead parked down at the beach at did the walk from there. Takes about an hour each way but worth it. A few stops along the way with steps down to smaller bays such as Stingray Bay, Gem Stone Bay. They add to the energy output and pretty view intake!
  • Been a few years since I last walked it but it's now been sealed, so it's like walking on a pavement albeit a bit up and down. It now takes way less time than the suggested 45 mins even when you stop to take in the fantastic views along the way. Don't forget to do the side trips to Gemstone & Stingray Bay.
  • The cathedral cove walk starts where the busses and other cars can park on an easy day. If you need to park on the official oarking lots, it is quite a journey. The trip itself takes you around 45 minutes mostly down hill, but afterwards it is a steep climb. Don't forget to enjoy the viewings on your way down and take your time to look into the two beaches Stingray and Gemstone.
  • Easy 45 mins walk to the cathedral cove beach. This should easily be one of the best beaches of NZ. They have stopped parking at the location but there is a free parking close to the information center and a shuttle service plying to and from every 20 mins. The walk can be easily covered by all ages with tarred road almost to the beach from parking.
