Shantytown Heritage Park, Greymouth

3.5
Historic Site · Tourist Spot
Travel back to New Zealand's pioneering past at Shantytown Heritage Park, a recreated 19th century gold mining town. Ride the chuffing steam train through the bush and along the route of the original settlement's tram track. Experience the sights, sounds and smells of a saw mill, try panning for gold, and dress up in 19th-century attire for an old-time photo. Friendly volunteers staff the town and accompanying museum, providing information about the region's rich history. The onside cafe offers light snacks and full meals. • Great place to visit with really good displays. Train trip in grounds a very cool experience. Buildings well kept and good price for what you see and learn. Enjoyed panning for gold and friendly...  more »
  • Sadly we missed the last steam train but they made sure we were still able to pan for some gold. Such an amazing collection throughout the park, well worth the visit and a great way to spend a few...  more »
  • Although it was raining on the day of our visit it just added to the experience. I thoroughly enjoyed the walk around Shantytown. It has well presented displays and provides a good brief on the gold.....  more »

  • A tourist trap, plain and simple. The atmosphere is depressing and the staff don't seem particularly invested. Don't waste your money on gold panning: it is done in still water troughs (meaning gold is likely placed there) instead of the running river. Only three buildings are original. There are not really any trade demonstrations or activities other than the train ride, so you just wander around the town and look at the 'shops'.
  • Cool experience! A lot of information and details about the life in the area from the 1860s The train ride is also very nice I would recommend the visit!
  • Good displays. Appalling cafe. No cabinet food. Offering only "chips, wedges, burgers, etc"...... and poor service!
  • Talk about an old kiwi wild west! we had quite an experience in 2016 touring the town and riding on the train and most importantly, learning how to find real gold, loved it so much!
  • Great experience for all ages-my teens were fascinated by the replica Chinatown and we explored all of it. The gold flakes we each got from panning were a real bonus
