Travel back to New Zealand's pioneering past at Shantytown, a recreated 19th century gold mining town. Ride the chuffing steam train through the bush and along the route of the original settlement's tram track. Experience the sights, sounds and smells of a saw mill, try panning for gold, and dress up in 19th-century attire for an old-time photo. • Spent a morning with friends at Shanty Town. Was a bit disappointed that it's not more interactive with staff in costume etc. It's very much just a museum and overpriced entry at that.
  • We initially decided not to visit Shanytown because the advertising made it sound too Disney-like. However, our B&B host recommended it so we went and thoroughy enjoyed it. Very interesting buildings,...  more »
  • We really enjoyed our visit to Shanty town. We felt the woman on reception could have been more welcoming and informative.

  • Great visit to Greymouth on the Trans alphine. Shanty Town is a must do!
  • Pretty uninformative and non-genuine. Definite lack of signs and information boards. There's not much to do once you've wandered around the artificial ye olde buildings. The gold-panning sounded fun, but: it costs extra; and is completely orchestrated in wooden basin things, in which you're guaranteed to find some planted specs of gold (which you can then trade for a drink).
  • Interesting and a lot of fun for a young family
  • Wild west coast
  • Very nice open-air museum. There are lot of wekas. It must go. Can be a little tour by train to steam.
