East Cape Lighthouse, Gisborne
(4.6/5 based on 170+ reviews on the web)
Ponder New Zealand's maritime heritage at East Cape Lighthouse, a historical cylindrical tower standing proudly above East Cape. Climb up the 700 steps to reach its base, gaze out over the coastline it watches over, and imagine a time before modern nautical technology. You can stand directly beneath the tower and take in the panoramic view that it affords, but note that access to the lighthouse itself is not available to the public. Use our Gisborne vacation planner to add East Cape Lighthouse and other attractions to your Gisborne vacation plans.

  • Don't let the 800 steps put you off. I'm 71, moderately fit and, with 3-4 "breathers" made it up in 20mins and down in 15mins. The views to sea and inland were worth it.
  • Although it's 20 km of gravel road to the parking area and then quite a climb the views are worth it. Check out the island close off shore where the original lighthouse stood
  • Just an awesome place to be...great view...end of the world feeling...don't miss this place...it is a rough road but drive slowly and its ok
