Lake Matheson Walk, Fox Glacier

Scenic Walking Area · Tourist Spot
Enjoy a gentle walk around Lake Matheson Walk, famous for its mirror views of Aoraki/Mount Cook and Mount Tasman. Experience the reflections from a specially constructed jetty, reached by a short walk leading past tall kahikatea and rimu trees. Keep an eye out for native birds, water fowl, and otters. The best time to experience the reflection effect is at dawn and dusk, when the water is at its calmest. • We stopped into the cafe for lunch and enjoyed beautiful food selected from a large variety on the menu. The coffee was excellent and the service was first class. The awsome view just topped off the.....  more »
  • I've done this a few times over the years, and it's gone to a track type walk to a very well made path. Nice to do when not so many tourists around, on some previous occasions has felt like walking...  more »
  • What a great walk! Nice paths, fairly easy walk, beautiful lookouts of the lake and mountains. This is perfect for morning or an afternoon walk, especially when the weather is clear and wind is low...  more »
  • Beautiful walk even though the lake was not still enough to see the famous reflection. Took the long way around and was the only person for most of it. Absolutely beautiful and peaceful. Loved walking through the flax plants. The paths are easy to navigate and has clear signs. Worth the trip out. Definitely going to be going back!
  • Amazing views but you have to be very lucky with the right weather. If not - pretty average, just a random loop walk around a boring lake. Rated 5 stars for a good day.
  • We thought the road led to the lake, it was an hour walk after you got to the kiosk area. There is a great viewing area to photograph the fox glacier. A better day I am sure would give a better photo.
  • Charming location. After the dramatic hills and trek to the glacier, this comes up as a quiet beauty. Great views. Lovely Cafe on the way adds to the feeling of contentment.
  • The only reason that this is a four star review is that it suffers in comparison to other walks in New Zealand. We went when it was foggy on the mountains so maybe I didn't get the full experience. Other walks I have been on have had more stunning views. On the plus side there were plenty of information stations about various trees. Some nice look out points. The path is well tended and the local bird life were in full flight. The full loop is about 2.5km. Not too strenuous. Worth doing if you've got a spare hour in Fox Glacier.
