Take a journey through the history of Dunedin, following its progress from the earliest communities to the modern city, at Toitu Otago Settlers Museum. The oldest history museum in New Zealand, it houses extensive collections of items that depict everything from the area's Maori culture and history to the inventions of the information era that changed everyday life in the city. The exhibits of arms, uniforms, and other items display the impact that global events such as World War I had on the area. A gallery proudly showcases the works of local artists who helped establish Dunedin as one of New Zealand's main cultural hubs. Admission to the museum is free and guided tours are available once a day at an additional cost. Plan my Dunedin trip by asking Inspirock to come up with tips and suggestions.

  • This was one of the first places we went to in Dunedin. It gave us such an insight into the history of the city. Really interesting exhibitions.  more »
  • This is a large museum so leave at least an hour to visit. There is so much to see. Entry is free yet there is nothing skimped on the presentation of the stories. The original railway station is...  more »
  • I really enjoyed my visit there. Lots of interesting things many of which took me back to the days of my youth in the 50s and 60s. Some excellent horse drawn vehicles like the Cobb & Co stage coach...  more »

  • Great place to visit and catch up on the local history. So many great NZ companies founded in the area that no longer exist, very sad. But at least their heritage is being preserved for others to learn about.
  • Very nice museum with something for everyone. I specially liked the automotive department. One small criticism: the first part is too dark. If you're above 50 you will need a flashlight to see or read anything.
  • Great job New Zealand! Incredibly we'll thought out facility with many interesting stories and artifacts. This place speaks volumes to the Kiwis respect for their history and culture. Did I mention it was free... Go visit and leave a donation. Excellent work!
  • An excellent museum showing the history of the joining of two main cultures, Polynesian and Scottish/European, in the growth of Dunedin. Their joint efforts throughout the last 150 years or so are well demonstrated in a variety of topical displays. There are some interactive displays to help entertain children, but not a great number. The museum also has an excellent cafe and gift shop. And it is FREE!! You can't afford NOT to go!
  • Excellent museum with a fantastic collection. This is a must for visitors to Dunedin, especially if you're into the history of the area, or have ancestry in this region. There is something to interest absolutely everyone here. My family, including two older teens enjoyed this experience. Allow a good few hours or more to look through the entire collection.
