Just a short drive away from the city of Dunedin, this is the only albatross colony on inhabited mainland in the world. The state-of-the-art visitor center lets you learn about these amazing birds and about the center's preservation work that started in the early 20th century. The indoor viewing area lets you observe the creatures in their natural environment throughout the year without disturbing them. The center also organizes various other tours of the Otago Peninsula, including visits to a little penguin colony and the historical Fort Taiaroa, home of the world's only functional Armstrong disappearing gun.   • The Albatross is such a regal bird and even if birds aren't your thing you will LOVE this experience! The drive out to the peninsula alone is worth the trip then the centre itself is well designed not...  more »
  • Knowledgeable guide (Sara) made our visit almost as much as the hour plus views of the albatross in flight, and our close up views of the chicks. Totally awesome to see this amazing bird.  more »
